Engagement rate calculator
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ base × 100. The base can be followers, reach or views. Enter your post's numbers and see the math.
Fill in at least one base below. With more than one, you see every rate.
An example with the math shown
A fictional Reel with 120 likes, 8 comments, 15 saves and 6 shares adds up to 149 interactions. With 5,000 followers, the rate is 149 ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 2.98%. If reach was 12,000 accounts, the rate by reach is 149 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 1.24%.
Which base to use
| Base | What it answers | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Followers | How much the account moves the people who follow it | Goes over 100% when a video travels far beyond your base. A poor fit for Reels |
| Reach | How much the post moved the people who saw it | Only the account owner can see this number |
| Views | How much interaction each play generated | The same person can count more than once |
What's a good engagement rate?
We're not going to put a number here. The tables floating around use different samples, niches and formulas, and two reports can land far apart for the same platform. What works is comparing you with you: calculate the rate of your last 10 videos, on the same base, and see which ones landed above your average. Then ask what those videos did differently.
The rate tells you one video did better. It doesn't tell you why. For that you have to look at the video itself: the hook and how long people stay. If your rate dropped and stayed down, start by ruling out a limit on your account.
How to calculate your engagement rate
- Open the post's insights and write down likes, comments, saves and shares.
- Add up the interactions.
- Divide by the base: followers, reach or views.
- Multiply by 100 to get the percentage.
Frequently asked questions
What is the engagement rate formula?
Total interactions divided by the base, times 100. Interactions are likes, comments, saves and shares. The base is followers, reach or views.
Should I count saves and shares?
If you have access to them, yes. On Instagram, other people's profiles only show likes and comments, so always compare with the same formula.
Can I calculate another profile's engagement?
Yes, with what's public: likes, comments and followers. On Instagram, only the owner sees reach and saves.
Why did my rate go over 100%?
It happens on the followers base, when a post reaches far more people than follow the account. Use reach in that case.
How do I calculate the rate for a whole profile?
Calculate the rate for each post from the last 30 days and take the average. Use the same base for all of them.
Does the calculator store my numbers?
No. The math happens in your browser and your numbers aren't sent anywhere.
