Free video compressor
Pick your video, say where it's going and download a smaller MP4. Compression runs in your browser with ffmpeg: the file isn't uploaded to any server. No sign-up, no watermark.
How the compression works
Three things make a video heavy: the resolution, how much the picture is compressed and the audio. The tool caps the shorter side of the picture (720 pixels on the Light option, for both vertical and horizontal video), re-encodes it in H.264 and sets the audio to 96 kbps. It never raises the resolution. The output is always MP4, which opens on any phone and uploads to any platform.
Compression loses quality. That's true for this tool and any other. If the video is going to Reels, the platform compresses it again after upload, so use the first option and keep the original.
Limits, no sugarcoating
- The first run downloads the engine: about 32 MB, then it stays in your browser cache.
- It's slower than an installed program. The browser uses one processor core. In our test on a desktop computer, 30 s of 1080p video took 99 s. Expect longer on a phone.
- Phones: the limit here is 300 MB. Even that can fail on a phone with little memory. On a computer, 2 GB.
- An already compressed video may not shrink. If that happens, the tool tells you, and you can keep the original or try a stronger option.
Where your file goes
Nowhere. The video is read and re-encoded in your browser. The internet only downloads the engine (ffmpeg.wasm). The site logs the page visit, with nothing from the file.
How to reduce a video's file size
- Choose the video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV).
- Say where it's going. The smaller the option, the smaller the file and the lower the sharpness.
- Click compress and keep the tab open. The first time, your browser downloads the video engine.
- Watch the result on screen before you download it.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens in the browser, on your device.
Does it add a watermark?
No.
How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on the original. High-resolution phone video tends to shrink a lot. Video that has already been compressed, like a file that came through a messaging app, shrinks very little. You see the result on screen before downloading.
Which option should I use for WhatsApp or text messages?
The Messaging and WhatsApp option, up to 480p. To send it without losing as much sharpness, use Light.
Does it work with iPhone MOV or HEVC video?
Yes, the tool reads those formats and delivers an MP4 with H.264.
Can I compress a video with no quality loss at all?
Real compression with zero loss doesn't exist. What you can do is lose very little, by using the first option.
