Instagram shadowban: how to check and fix it

Shadowban is a popular term that Instagram doesn't use as an official feature. What does exist is an account or a piece of content being kept out of recommendations to people who don't follow you, and professional accounts can check that in the profile menu, under Account Status. Account Status doesn't cover everything: watermarks, repeated video and low resolution also reduce visibility, and no official source says those cases show up there.

What Instagram says

In 2023, Adam Mosseri addressed the topic in the official ranking post. He says there's no single definition, that many people use the word to mean an account limited or hidden without explanation, and that this is not Instagram's intention when it ranks content. He also says that if something makes your content less visible, you should know about it and be able to appeal. That's why Account Status exists.

In other words: limits on distribution do exist, with written rules and a place to check them. Hiding accounts without explanation, Instagram says, is not the intention, and it admits it can still be more transparent.

How to check Account Status

  1. Open your profile and tap the menu in the top right corner.
  2. Scroll to More info and support.
  3. Tap Account Status.
  4. Check removed content, the features you can't use and, on a professional account, whether the account can be recommended to non-followers.

On a computer, the path is More, Settings and Account Status. Menu names change between app versions. If something was flagged by mistake, you can request a review right there.

Stay away from "shadowban test" sites. Account Status only shows when you're logged into your own account, and no outside site can see that data. It's even worse if a site asks for your password.

What takes you out of recommendations

The Recommendations Guidelines are stricter than the general rules, because the content goes to people who didn't ask to see it. Instagram gives these examples:

The effect is specific: this content can still be distributed normally to your followers, and Instagram tries not to recommend it to non-followers. Repeated violations, or banned content in your profile photo or bio, can make the whole account ineligible for a period of time. Instagram doesn't say how long that period lasts.

There are also cases of lower visibility with no violation at all. Instagram cites low resolution, watermarks, muted video, borders, too much text and already-posted video. Don't count on Account Status to warn you about these: check them yourself.

How to investigate, in order

Before you decide you've been penalized, test the causes you can measure.

  1. In Insights, separate reach from followers and non-followers. Instagram shows that breakdown. If only non-follower reach dropped, think recommendations and hook.
  2. Compare with the previous period. Insights cover up to 90 days.
  3. Open your last 10 Reels. Did average watch time drop? Then the problem is the video. Go back to how to make Reels and start with the opening.
  4. If you used a follower or like app, stop and change your password. Your account can be limited, disabled or shut down.

Shadowban myths

What about TikTok?

TikTok uses the term ineligible for the For You feed. It reports the decision in three places: Inbox, profile and analytics. Accounts that keep posting content unfit for the feed may see the account drop out of For You and become harder to find in search. You can appeal, and TikTok may restore the account automatically, depending on how much unfit content is still up. See what keeps a video off the feed.

What to do now, in 15 minutes

  1. Open Account Status and check for flagged content or blocked features.
  2. If there is any, edit or delete what broke the rule, or request a review if it was a mistake.
  3. In Insights, separate reach from followers and non-followers over the last 30 days.
  4. Work out the median views of your last 10 Reels and compare with the 10 before them.
  5. Look at average watch time on your weakest videos and find where people drop off.
  6. Change one thing only, such as the opening of the video, and post 3 videos before you draw a conclusion.

Frequently asked questions

Is shadowban real on Instagram?

Not as a feature with that name. Instagram acknowledges limits on recommendations, with public rules and a place to check them in Account Status, and says it doesn't intend to hide content without explanation.

How do I know if I've been shadowbanned?

Open Account Status. On a professional account, that's where you see whether your content or profile is affecting eligibility for recommendations. If nothing shows up, check for watermarks, repeated video and average watch time.

How long does a shadowban last?

Instagram says "a period of time", with no number. We found no official source for the 14- or 30-day timelines going around. What you can do is fix the content or request a review.

How do I get out of a shadowban?

Edit or delete what was flagged, request a review if there was a mistake, stop using third-party apps and follow the guidelines. Then keep an eye on Account Status.

Do personal accounts have Account Status?

Yes, with removed content and blocked features. Instagram announced the recommendations eligibility check for professional accounts, so it may not show up on a personal account.

My followers aren't seeing my posts. Is that a shadowban?

Probably not. Recommendation limits affect people who don't follow you. Followers see what Feed ranks for them, and that depends on each person's interaction history.
